Make an Owl Pincushion.

Are you ready to make a little Owl Pincushion?

Requirements:

Two pieces of fabric (the largest one measuring at least 6" x 7") for the main body and                         base and a smaller piece for the center insert.
Stuffing

Thread to match fabric

Template plastic or cardboard

Two buttons
Usual sewing equipment

Please check your printer to ensure it prints to the correct scale.

Finished size: Approximately 3"


Note: You can cut out the templates from the sheet or transfer the shapes to template plastic or cardboard if you are going to make a few. You will need to cut out the circle (base "C" ) in cardboard or template plastic as this will be used as part of the pincushion when completed.

 Using the templates transfer the shapes onto the fabric.

 Cut out all shapes on the line except "C" which is cut out with at about a 1/2 " border.

Using matching thread sew a running stitch around the edge of C and gather up slightly, insert cardboard/plastic disc and draw up thread. Sew a couple of small stitches to secure. I use a longer piece of thread and double it over for strength.

 With right sides together stitch main body piece (B) to belly piece (A) stopping about 1/4" from the top (narrow end). I used a 1/4" seam and shortened the length of the stitch on the sewing machine.

Finger press seam open. Do the same to the other side so that you have a little cone shape. You should be able to see where the other seam stops so that a gap is not left when you are finished.
Note: I had to unpick the seam in the photo below as I forgot to stop the 1/4" from top!!

Turn right side out and just play with the top point until you are happy with it. You may need to trim the excess fabric but be careful not to cut too much off and leave a hole! Sometimes the beak will turn out better than others.

Fold over the point about a scant 1" to make the face. Pin in place.

Using matching thread sew beak down onto the belly part. I take a couple of stitches on the top then flip it over and sew the rest from the back (inside). You will be able to feel the beak with your finger.

Using matching thread sew a running stitch around the base of the body leaving the needle attached. Draw up the thread slightly and begin stuffing the body. Use small amounts at a time, firming down as you go.

I like to keep drawing up the thread as I stuff to contain it and to shape the body as I go. You can stuff as firm or soft to your own preference. Mine is firm but not too hard.

When you are happy with the stuffing, pull the thread tight and take a few stitches to secure. Keep thread attached.

Attach the base to the body, using the attached needle and thread and a slip stitch,  holding it in place while you stitch. Adjust gathers as you sew if required.

Now to find some buttons for the eyes! Best part!  Find two matching (or if it's your fancy to have unmatched eyes then please do so) attach the eyes to the front of the bird using the photos as a guide for placement.
