I have recently found the series The Great British Sewing Bee after reading about it on a friends blog and it has rekindled a love of sewing garments that I didn't realize I had lost! When did this happen? Why did it happen?

I guess I just got caught up in the commercialism of Social Media and began to buy lower quality mass produced items that hardly last 6 months as a cheap alternative for time poor people.
So cheap it was easy to throw out and replace instead of
repairing!
I don't believe it's always cheaper to make your own clothes, just that they are better quality and last longer and are unique!
Plus, the enjoyment of creating and wearing a one of a kind!
The range and accessibility of fabrics has improved over time and the internet allows delivery to your door, there was not this choice for me while living in a small country town years ago. No internet back then! So I made do with what I could source locally.
Turn the clock forward.......
Within the space of a few days I have run up a couple of easy fit shirts. Not too hard to make and just out of cotton they helped remind me of the sewing skills I had forgotten about over the years.

I love how our conversations have turned from embroidery, quilting and cooking to SEWING clothes! Though we still do chat about the other things, Sewing Bee has really opened (for me) and re-opened (for you) a door we're excited to walk through.
ReplyDeleteGood advice too...quality today is way below par so investing in fabric to make quality items that will stand the test of time is wise. xx
Hi Rosie,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration ! I have a shirt/blouse pattern that I have made years ago. It would be fun use that pattern and make something for Spring!
Stopping by via Jenny of Elefantz.
hugs, take care

Stopping by from Jenny of Elefantz blog to say hello and check out your lovely sewn clothing creations. Oh my I like them a lot. Especially the red top....The older I get the more I like the color red. Can't wait to see your next creations.
ReplyDeleteYour tops look great! And cool for the hot weather. On that pattern, I adore the dress with sleeves. That is how I used to dress, when I was young and skinny. LOL
ReplyDeleteHi Rosie love your tops well done xx
ReplyDeleteHi Rosie
ReplyDeleteJust popped over from Jenny's blog. I used to make all my clothes and then my children's too. Think we got out of the habit because fabrics got really expensive and it was so hard to find all the bits and pieces you needed so eventually I just gave up. I started making dresses for my grandchildren a few years ago but now they're teenagers and into leggings and sweatshirts!
However one has just got a sewing machine and wants to make some tops and start cutting denim skirts shorter. To be honest I'm not sure that's possible! Interesting times ahead after the lockdown once I can sew with her.
Eqnjoy the Great British Sewing Bee, I've never got into it but maybe next time.
Hopped over here from Jenny's.....what a lovely blog you have! I'm all for slowing down, repurposing, and being intentional about aging gracefully with my hand in the Lord's hand. Love your tops, and now I'm going to have to look for that sewing bee since you AND Jenny have crowed about it! LOL Hugs from across the sea....
